In the spring of 1999, after my first cancer scare, and breaking off an engagement, I was completely sick and tired of how my life was going. I was working part-time as a Caddy at a private golf club just north of New York City, as well as in multiple stock and bond broker training programs, when I decided to move to Key West after seeing a Travel Channel show on the Florida Keys. Really. Greyhound, took 38 hours.
My dream of being an unemployed beach bum not working out, after being fired from Blue Heaven (because I sucked as a waiter), I found work with one of the major resorts, where they were kind enough not to fire me until 9/11, when quite a number of people were let go all over the island. Travel had ground to a halt.
After some bouncing around (working, not drinking), I found myself with one of the local catering companies, where I remained until it was sold to the folks who decided to also open the Conch Shack on Lobsterfest weekend, 2009. I transferred to the "Shack", and have helping run it ever since.
After being bombarded with questions from tourists on a daily basis, and listening to some truly outrageous bullshit being told to them by some locals, I decided to start Freshwater Dave Key West. It's been a lot of fun, and I've found helping people have a good time extremely satisfying.
Who knows where this will go? What I do know is that I'm having the time of my life, and with being an online personality being a "thing" now, I'll take it as far as I can.
Wish me luck!
